    fork oil what what ?

busy doing fork seal on my KTM350 and the manual calls for 625mls SAE4 oil.

I have gone through almost every fork oil I can find on the shelf at game services and all of them are rated as 4W, 5W, 7W, 10W etc. none of them actually say "SAE4".

Is it therefore safe to assume that the SAE4 is the same thing as Motul 4W racing fork oil ?

Motul Factory line FTW but you can gooi almost any 5W fork oil in there. (what everybody did since a couple of years ago)

Depends on what you weigh, riding style and so forth but for most 5W is fine

Fork oil ain't what the label say.

Find one that work for you and stick to it.

I only use the std motorex 4w that the factory use in wp forks.

Who is our resident oil fundi here? CDVDH you got my attention here.

I see 3 products from motul here. I use motul exclusively cos I like it. I never do my own forks so not always 100% sure which motul ends up inside.
    @Bush Wacker take notes here. . . .

On a side note, ive got a WP digital fork pump, where am I gonna get a needle for it?

I don't know much about oils, but I know someone who work in the oil industry.( And no, he is not a drum roller)

I once picked up that a 2.5 w made my forks stiffer than what it was with a 5w.

I called my fried @Showtime to discuss it whith him.

He later send me this chart. So we started looking into it. Found out what the viscosity of the motorex 4w is.

I then compared it to the most popular oils I can get and saw that there isn't really a better oil for me. The thing is, I have done alot of testing, and my weight and riding style os best suited with std setup on all the 300's I have owned.

I bought 2 boxes of motorex 4w just to ake sure I don't run out any time soon. I regularly service my forks.

Can you link us or copy the technical jargon to the specific one you use please?

I love my forks and they work great and do feel difference service to service but not doing it myself there are too many variables. 2019 is year of the fork . . .

Forks is the easiest thing to do. Just find out from who ever is doing your what exactly how they do your setup. Then you can start playing around and can always go back.

Best is to stick to one oil.

    Technical data
Properties Unit Test according to Values
    Colour red
    Density at 20 C ASTM D4052 0.881
    Viscosity at 40 C mm/s DIN 51562-1 16.0
    Viscosity at 100 C mm/s DIN 51562-1 5.0
Viscosity index DIN ISO 2909 >250
    Pourpoint C ASTM D5950 <-40
    Flash point C.O.C. C DIN EN ISO 2592 <-130

@Shock_logic aka @Justin W I recall having that pointy laser thingy, what is the operating temp of our oil under harsh conditions? And what are we looking for in terms of a viscosity index?

Despite what most people think rear shocks although run pretty warm don't get excessively hot. in heavy use you can expect around 65-75deg C. (hot to touch by hand however)
Most fully synthetic fluids are good for up to 120-150 deg C.
In respect to Vi rating generally speaking the higher the Vi the more "stable" and "consistent" the viscosity is. so basically between 30 deg and 110 deg C the damping remains the same (in theory).
2 things however you must consider. This is purely based on the stability of the fluid. The shocks (or forks) themselves don't always cope with temperature particularly well. Aftermarket shock have temperature compensation designed into them so as much as the fluids are stable the shock may not be
Secondly as a general rule the lower the oil weight (W) the higher the Viscosity index (Vi). A 2w fluid can have a Vi of 400 whereas a 10w fluid can have a Vi of just 100.
This means that the 2w is more stable and consistent and the 10w will change it viscosity more so. For example with engine and drivetrain oil this is desirable, but in suspension not so much
