    Transition to enduro

    Hi gents

Since my move to Durban, I have ridden at Thunder Valley in PMB once and its honestly not worth the trip there everytime. So, to keep riding, I am thinking of trading my bike in on an enduro.

I know nothing about it. I have thought about doing one or two races that are nearby if I ever get good enough.

I dont know if I will even enjoy it, and going out on my bike wont prove anything as it is an MX bike.

Some light shed on the subject will be appreciated.

Current bike is a 2013 KTM 450 SXF.

    Either that or motard.

I would say hook up with a group of enduro type guys in your area and go for a few rides with them. Your bike isnt ideal, but Ive seen worse out there.

You will see from there if you should make the change or not. Im also sure the guys will gladly let you try out there bikes on the rides. That will also help you decide what bike to go with.

Yeah I will see if I am able to get in a ride with a few guys. I was hoping to hook up with on or two guys from here.

I am waiting to hear from a guy that has a Husky 250 2 smoke enduro machine.

Having done mx you will not struggle to much with the transition to enduro. Keep in mind that the KZN enduro's are generally more extreme. The 450sx will be a tank and not ideal for the terrain. I know a few mx guys and the biggest problem they have with enduro is the dings and scratches there bikes get. MX riders like there bikes clean and sleak, there bikes spend more time in a wash bay then on the actual track. If i lived in KZN it would be a simple choice because the rest of us have wet dreams about the terrain KZN has to offer.

It would probably be worth touching base with the Pinetown Off Road Club (PORC) as they do a number of social outrides and also host a couple of really fun events every year. The events cater to most levels of riders and you'll quickly learn what will suite you best.

Another intro to bush riding could be the dirtfest rides. Very laid back vibe, with generally easy to moderate routes so you should be fine on your current bike. The next one is 29 July at Eston Primary. Always a good day out.

If you are keen to race, possibly consider some of the XC races put on by KZN Racing. The next event being this Sunday 20 May at the Eston Famers Club. The XC races are obviously not super technical (so faster than WFO's, in general) and you 'should' be fine on your 450. I assume you'll be entering the WOW category?

If you take to bush riding and enjoy the odd scrumming session then consider the WFO's which are probably the next step up WRT technicality and racing. I think the next WFO's are to form part of the June Impi to be held in Tugela Ferry. I wouldn't venture there with a 450 MX bike and expect to have a good time TBH.

Plenty of bush riding to be had in KZN

Yeah if something were to happen she is quite heavy. Another issue I am worried about is overheating.

I prefer the smoother flowing tracks to technical rocky stuff.
    @Super_mil

Now you speaking another language ha ha. I am not sure what any of the classes are so not sure where I would fit in but the XC sounds more like it being faster paced and not very technical.
@Scully, come down when you can and we can do some riding.

Does anyone know where else in KZN other than near Durban there are good trails? I went to Kokstad the other day, beautiful and vastly open sections of land, surely there is riding there?

Are there facebook groups or pages I can follow that have this info?

I went and had a look. Track not well maintained and looks quite boring. I am not sure about the enduro loop but I believe they have one.

You will need a flywheel weight as well. If the price and cond are good you won't go far wrong.
Beer, so much more than just a breakfast drink.
If I had saved all the money I spent on beer, I'd spend it on beer.

Most here will tell you to rather get something off the bat that is purpose made from the factory. Rather than spending money modifying something that was built for another purpose. Unless of course its a bargain of note. If you are planning enduro and electric start is a good idea as well.

Oz, have always struck me as a defiant free thinker. Don't buy into the cliche and give a part timer (well meaning) kak advice. Ktm's are good but certainly not the only item out there.

True story.... it may not be the best enduro bike... but a YZ250 with all the enduro bits is one hell of a bike

Thanks for the input guys. Still keeping my options open, no rush. Still looking between 2T and 4T. 2T makes sense from a weight perspective.

The main issue will be being able to sell my bike for a decent amount to be able to then get a different bike.

This YZ250 with WR gearbox they think it has, is going for R30k, probably a few other mods needed to make it a better enduro bike needed.

It would be strange if they went to all to all the effort WRT a WR box but no flywheel weight. All that's required after that is the mandatory protection. I know of a few guys who first weight the flywheel and then don't bother with the WR box.
