I dont understand - he is in the DSP anyone can help you in a designated service point - anywhere outside that would be classified as outside assistance - however person hopping onto bike without helmet could be frowned upon .

It was not for the assistance as far as i can remember, (it was about 2005 so its in the cobwebs). The top riders (think mahoney was one) ran out of fuel about 1-2 km from the dsp, so someone from his team went down with fuel to fill him up and out of courtesy he gave him a lift back to DSP and i think someone spotted it and DQed him (it was over 10 years ago!! it may or may not have happened, it might have even been in a movie i saw ... useful grey matter is becoming scarce real estate in my kop these days )

Was probably disqualified for outside assistance and not for giving the chap a lift.

taking fuel out to a rider outside of a DSP is outside assistance , happened to a few junior riders 2 years ago in the cape when they took a wrong turn onto the senior loop and ran out of fuel , fathers went out to refuel them and they all go DQ'd for outside assistance , cost little Matthew his championship that year .

The DSPs were chaos with cars everywhere, very confusing if you arrive there.
Remember all the classes converge here so support vehicles by the hundreds and very little flat spots big enough in Lesotho to accommodate them.

The last DSP you went out on a loop and came back to the same DSP just to head out on the final leg of the day.
You got a little cable tie around the front brake line to indicate that you have done the loop.
The problem is that you did not have to change routes on the GPS at his DSP, so it can easily happen that you take the wrong exit out the DSP.
I had someone wait for me as I came in, jumped on the back of the bike and rode with to the car, that same person would then also jump on the bike again and lead me to the starting point of the next section.

So I believe it was an honest mistake and nothing the organisers or Vinnie could do to make it right.
You are right, what happened to Vinnie was a perfect storm, everyone and no one is to blame. Fact is that they were NEVER meant to even come into the pits in the first place – but the marshals just happily ushered everybody in, if Vinnie looked down at his GPS he would’ve seen that he wasn’t met to pit, but because all the riders went in he naturally thought he should go pit.
So if you were zoomed in on your GPS it looked like the track ended and then went onto the next one … problem was that the new track started at the pits and went straight home.
The Marshal did ask him where his cable tie was, Vinnie said to the guy he didn’t get one – so the Marshal said “that’s ok you can go” and like he said he was on track but did think something was off because he was riding fresh tracks. I guess when you are competing for a place you kinda go into a bubble and just ride.
To just get some facts straight, Vinnie was not leading with 20 mins he came in almost the same time as Matt at the Ramabanta DSP and as mentioned before neither of them were meant to pit.
And yes, it is a pity what happened, and we were all sad about it, but these things happen and that’s just the way it is. He did have the option to go and redo the whole loop plus the last bit AGAIN from the Ramabanta DSP for a finishers medal, but what’s the point if you were going for podium.
All and all I think it was a good roof, but the pits were a mess and very confusing especially that last DSP

Correct someone would have loaded incorrect loop for him. even if you are shown incorrect path to follow at start of DSP you will quickly see that you not following correct route as per GPS.

Like I said for Silver we had to change tracks, not sure about bronze but I dont know why they wouldnt have had to change since we rode about 30+ km to get to DSP and loaded Baboons Sister which was about 27km could be wrong slightly about KM's.

Also what I noticed was that it was very confusing to know where to go after refueling at DSP so the pit crew needed to assist in this regard, as they are the ones who are aware where the guys are heading to after refueling that was my observation not saying its applicable to everyone. As a rider you had to remember if that you have ridden Silver 01, 02, 03, 04 etc if you loaded Silver 04 after riding silver 02 then you would possible go on wrong route and miss a track.

Nobody loaded the incorrect loop - he changed his GPS from Sat Bronze 2 to Sat Bronze 3. Sat Bronze 3 started at the pits going home. Sat Bronze 2 had the extra piece in that went past the pits ... Like i said they weren't meant to refuel there twice!!!! only after they did that section they were meant to refuel, but the marshals made them all come into the pits

Actually looking at that map again ... what a shit design , they should've broken that in 2 pieces - the track going out and the piece going home practically join

Did anyone else make the same mistake at Roof?

Sometimes it is so easy for this type of thing to happen.
At the recent Lowveld Enduro at Killarney, I got to a split in the red and green loops (going back into the forest) and for some reason went the kiddies route for about 100m. When I looked back down at the GPS I was on the track and carried on and finished the loop. Got back very quickly and thought that was quite strange, but had no idea I had cut out about 6km. Then on second loop, realised the mistake. After finishing I did go back to that split and redo the missing 6km so that at least in my mind I had finished. Happens so easily. From the timing results I could see that many had made the same mistake.

@Ratel I understand, guess Bronze was vastly different to Silver as we had to refuel and load new track. I am speaking from Silver point of view.

Actually SAD to see how KTM got no gold podiums considering the KTM brand has such a heritage at the Roof of Africa, some could say KTM in SA was built on its success at the Roof. Joh Wilkins looks healthy like a butchers dog
