MuddX Newbies at De Wildt - 30th March 2019

    Howzit Everybody

As many of you are aware, MuddX Newbie rides used to be somewhat of an institution in the Gauteng region. They were run monthly, with huge success, from February 2007 until late 2015. From 2016 to mid-2017 they became a quarterly event. And since then, really by demand only. I always look forward to when the demand starts ramping up because that’s my signal to start planning a lekker day out with a crowd of like-minded enthusiasts again.

Well….. that time has come around again. During the last few weeks I have fielded a bunch of queries on e-mail, whatsapp and direct face-to-face. So, after consulting the race calendar as it stands currently on Racecontrol.co.za, Saturday, 30th March looks perfect!!!

This time around, we’ll do it from the De Wildt Police Station (not the SAPS office, for those not in the know, the old De Wildt Cop Shop is what I’m referring to – this one: https://www.google.co.za/maps/place/....9466522?hl=en).

There has not been a price increase since 2017, so unfortunately, in order to make sure you all get fed and “hydrated” properly, I am adding an extra R25 to the old rate which brings us to R375.00 per head for this awesome day out in the bush on your dirt bikes.

Without re-inventing the wheel, I have copied and pasted my last chirp below for more detail about the day for those that have not joined us on one of these before:

For those that don’t know the story behind MuddX Noob Rides or just can’t remember, here’s the scoop:

If you’re just getting into the game and the “outride” option (as opposed to track riding – motocross, etc) is the one doing it for you right now then read on.

MuddX is a brand committed to social dirt biking enthusiasts, particularly the introduction of new blood into the sport.

One event that has had enormous success since 2007 is our Introduction to Outrides and De Wildt.

One of the biggest problems for new endure/outride enthusiasts is that the available places to go and ride in Gauteng are very limited, and due to the ever-increasing number of like-minded enthusiasts, very crowded. Most folks in this game have heard of the De Wildt area in the North West Province near Brits. It is considered the mecca for outriding if you’re from the Gauteng or North West Provinces. The only problem is that it has this stigma attached that it is only suitable for intermediate or extremely seasoned riders. This is absolutely not so!!!!

What our Introduction to Outrides and De Wildt events tries to accomplish are the following:
    • Introduce new offroad riders to a proper Outride
    • Introduce new offroad riders to De Wildt
    • Provide some low-level rider training
    • Make sure that everyone has so much fun and gains enough confidence to return on their own and enjoy this sport

How we do this is very simple. We take between 20 – 25 riders on a well organised outride that leaves from and returns to the "Police Station" or "Cop Shop". The pace of the ride is limited to that of the slowest in the group. We have frequent stops to:
    • Show you where you are in the De Wildt area, with specific reference to recognisable landmarks
    • Explain the type of terrain coming up
    • Explain how best to ride the terrain coming up

There are usually at least five MuddX marshals to assist. One in the lead, one at the rear, one on each flank, and one roving up and down the rider column. We make sure that nobody gets lost, that nobody is pushed beyond their limits, and that everybody has fun. If there is an obstacle on the trail that a rider is not comfortable with, there is never any pressure to attack it. One of the MuddX marshals will either take your bike across the obstacle for you or show you an alternate route around it.

There is a stop during the ride at a local shebeen for some refreshments and a boerie roll braai and drinks waiting at the Hotel when we return.

The Police Station is approximately an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. We meet there between 7:00 and 7:30 and try to get riding as close to 8:00 as we can. We usually return back to the Hotel by 13:00-14:00.

The event will cost each rider R375which includes the half way refreshments and the final braai and drinks.

Please e-mail me for booking details.

    Some reviews from previous events:

Had the best time ever out at Dewildt on Saturday, and you did a great job organising it all. Thanks again and I look forward to riding with you guys now that I’m more confident … the riverbed and 3 Fences and Back of the Moon that we couldn’t fit in.

    *****

……and I think you and your crew deserve all the plaudits you get. It was an excellent day out.....This rates as probably one of the best days of riding I had since I started. Did not feel compelled to do anything I was not comfortable with. Challenging as well.

    *****

Thank you so much for the ride on 3 Feb. it was great I learned so much and a very big thank you to all the guys that helped me out on the ride they were really great, I will definitely be there on the next one please book me in, just let me know when the money is required
Once again thank you so much

    *****

Just to say thank you for the ride on Saturday, think it is the best ride I have had at DeWilt. It was nice to ride up front and not to be worrying about getting lost or upsetting people by riding too slow. It was a great confidence boost for me as I realized my riding skills are not as bad as I thought, it is my fitness that needs worked on. Thanks again for your help and patience with us slower riders.
Best money I have spent since I got my bike !
    Thanks to all involved.

    *****

Awesome, awesome day, I feel so much better about riding, still not where I want to be but you and your helpers are awesome. Please book me in for the next one, just let me know when

    *****

Big ups to you and the sweepers, thanks for another fantastic day out at De Wildt....I have been to both these Newbie rides and to everyone considering them, they are well worth it. Organisation was fantastic. Once again thank you for an unreal day in bringing a no go zone for newbies to us...

    *****

Just wanted to say great job on this past Saturday, it was an awesome day out in the dirt. Would like to thank you and the rest of the guys that helped out for a great ride and introduction to DeWildt. Would gladly join if anymore of these socials are to happen, (please keep me informed).

    *****

Thanks again for a great day on Saturday, I feel like I am getting better and better all the time Its awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
My confidence is way up there, I can join in on Sams race on 17th thanks to you and your guys : )

    *****

To all who attended the ride on Sat I just like to say thanks you're a great bunch and i had a lot of fun. To Steve and Brad and Sean and all the other marshals , a special thanks, it was far better than expected and I believe that for people who haven't really experienced DeWildt properly this would definitely be my recommendation of the way to do it especially for the first time. Steve great organisation far better than expected and I will return as my small brain couldn’t process all the directions and markers in one ride. Will need a few more in order to really get my bearings. Thanks a lot guys, keep up the performance, you're doing a great job of promoting the sport.

    *****

    Hey Steve,

Thanks again for the ride on Saturday…best fun I’ve had on my bike so far.

    *****

    Hi Steve,

Just a quick note to say thanks for a great ride on Saturday,

Having done the Newbie Ride a month ago, and now the intermediate, it has certainly given me the confidence to go to Dewildt with mates, and would be highly recommended to anyone I meet.

    *****

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for a great day on Saturday, I really enjoyed myself and liked the terrain at De Wildt. I will certainly be back, keen to try out the tougher sections and get more familiar with the area.

    *****

Thank you once again for a perfect day : )

We had a great ride the weekend at De Wildt and will be back soon thanks for the effort and time spent with us newbies.

    *****

    Hi Steve,

Just to say thank you for another great ride on Saturday. Once again just like to say thanks to you for giving your time to us slow riders and newbies. It is really appreciated. Please pass my thanks on to Brad, Anthony and all who helped on Saturday.

    *****

Man, that was an awesome ride, can’t wait for the next one.

Those who have not done one of these rides do yourself a favour and go on the next one. The terrain is so varied and the marshals are very helpful. I learnt a lot and can’t wait to try it out on the next ride. Definitely the best ride I have done.

    *****

    Hi Steve

Thanks a million for such an awesome ride on Sat. I haven't had so much fun in quite a while!! The group we rode with really made it great.

And yourself and the marshals have a well organised event.

Thanks again, you will definitely see me at the next MuddX ride, if not before.

    *****

    Hi Steve

Thanks for the great ride on Saturday – had an absolute blast, really learn a lot about the area and definitely intend to return as often as possible.

Hopefully we can ride with you guys again sometime.

    *****

    Dear Steve,

Many thanks for an awesome and very informative ride on Saturday….you don’t realize how big Dewild actualy is!

Please let us know when you are riding again not with Newbies as Dan and I would love to tag along if possible?

    *****

    Hi Steve,

Thanks again for a great outing. Both me and Jacques really enjoyed it, even with his little problem. I will definitely go out with you on this ride for a couple of times and when you think we won’t hold you up we will do the intermediate trip. Think we will have to conquer those coconuts first. Those things nearly killed me. Just another technique to master. We are not used to rocks.

Also please pass this to all your marshals. Really a great bunch of guys.

    *****

Thanks for a unbelievable experience. The first of many to come.

Thanks also to all marshals and other Brads.

    Well done guys.

    *****

Hey TS and the rest of the marshals

Thanks for such an awesome day - I haven't had so much fun in quite a while!! Such an awesome group to ride with and such a great way to learn what DeWildt is about. These guys from MuddX really have organised a great riding experience.

You will definitely see me at the next one!!

    Thanks again guys!!

    *****

Was an incredible ride, thanks to all concerned.. how the hell you did you manage to get a photo of me sleeping?? yeah I was quite tired.. have some photo's too.. will post them later today hopefully..so you can all get another chance to gasp in awe at my bling black beauty of a CRF!!!

    have a blast guys..

see you soon, with some friends!!

    *****

Thanks Steve and everyone for a great ride, good fun and good company !

    Thanks

    *****

Thank you for a brilliant ride.

I learned a lot and can not wait to do the intermediate ride with MuddX. Thanks for all the tips I know it will improve my riding. Please convey my thanks to all the marshals who helped on the day they helped to make the day very pleasant and enjoyable.

    *****

This is for TS and all the guys involve in the Muddx Newbie ride

I took part in my first Muddx ride in Sept and had an absolute jol of a time. It was one of the most enjoyable rides I have been on. The guys who arrange the whole event are huge fun to ride with - they really make it fun and something to look forward to.

I was so looking forward to the Oct ride - it was on my birthday so I also thought it would be the perfect way to spend my b-day. My luck however change and unfortunately I had to work. I was highly disappointed but need to make money to pay for the toys.

I was still very keen to ride, so I joined another group on Sunday. This group was supposedly very similar to Muddx so I was naturally excited about the ride. However, the people on this ride were just so boring - no fun or excitement, so jokes between the riders, no smiles, nothing!! The ride was great, but as soon as you took off your helmet, the fun was gone.

The point I am trying to make is there are many other rides that you can take part in, but none as exciting and fun as the Muddx Newbie ride!

So to TS and the other Muddx guys - thanks a mil for all the fun and laughter

    *****

    Steve,

Thanks for the awesome intermediate ride on Saturday. It is exactly what I was looking for. I would like to compliment you on achieving what most would regard as impossible by creating a lekker fun, yet challenging ride for all levels of riders. Cudo's to you, the marshals and the rest of the guys we rode with for the great spirit and camaraderie. Just a pity that the rain washed away the social, but I will definitely be joining in for the next one.

    *****

Steve - here's to add to your quotes

"The MuddX newbie ride was once again EXCEPTIONALLY well organized, had loads n loads of fun and most importantly improved my riding through the coaching I received throughout my ride!"

Many thanks Steve; to you and your crew (special mention to Dave - your a walking/riding toolshed)! Awesomeness!

Looking forward to more MuddX rides when I get back from India. Bumped into Elmerfudd yesterday at Daytona - did some laps with him and he believes I have certainly improved. Prob the MuddX rides helping me!

Had loads of fun,.. many thanks!!!

"the Boerie rolls were great too"

    *****

Just a quick e-mail to say thanks to you and all at MuddX for a great ride on Saturday. I think the rain changed the dynamics somewhat; all for the better I think!

The event was really well organised and the marshals’ are great guys and really supportive and helpful – it’s just nice to be around good people that share the same passion you have for dirt bikes! Please convey my thanks to all concerned.

I look forward to the next Newbie ride and let me know if there are any other De Wildt experiences that I can join!

Thanks again for the T-shirt too…

    Hi Steve

    Awesome awesome awesome!

Thanks for an absolutely fantastic ride at de Wildt on Saturday.... It really was superbly organized, and a big thanks to you and the marshals.... It really was a splendid day out in the bush and has definitely got to be one of the best rides that I have ever been on!

My body feels like it has been on a bit of an epic trip, sore muscles, stiff joints etc (my fitness level has to be questioned though!), but I'm definitely ready for the next one!

Once again, thanks to you and your MuddX crew!

    *****

On behalf of my family – thank you for the ride!

I have come to the conclusion that at the age of 39 I may be a little too old to start riding a dirt bike again – especially since I last rode when I was about 13. The 6 seems be more my style J

You and your marshals were awesome, the ride was well planned and professionally executed. We really appreciated all the support and assistance.

    Best regards,

From a rather stiff and sore..

    Good afternoon Steve…

I have not had so much fun on my bike EVER! – FACT!!! You guys are the perfect example of the “biker camaraderie” that everyone talks about.

Yes, it was a hot and long day in the saddle… but the fact that I could crack a smile for the attached pic at the end of it… shows you how good it was!!

Thanks again… it is the best R350 that I have spent in ages!!!! I will defiantly be attending your next ride out there!!!!!

    All the best Steve…

So if anyone is wondering what skill levels can come on this ride, it is absolutely geared for newbies to the game. This past Saturday I took my own two sons on almost the exact route - 55km. They are 12 years old and 10 years old respectively and have been riding dirt bikes only since August last year. They had an awesome day out and loved every meter of the ride!
